Claims FAQs

  • What constitutes a claim?
Ordinarily, a claim is a demand for damages for injuries allegedly suffered as a result of medical care you provided or as a result of an accident that occurred on your premises. Notice of a claim is usually given to you in the form of suit papers or a claim letter.

  • How and when do I report a claim?
Upon receiving notice of a claim, contact Princeton by using the main number (609-452-9404) or initiate report of a claim online. Our claims representatives will explain the litigation process, including the typical sequence and timing of the various steps involved. You should also feel free to contact us to discuss any potentially problematic issues that arise in the course of your treatment of a patient which you believe may result in a claim being made. We will not create a claim file unless the patient (or his/her representative) actually asserts a claim, but we will be happy to discuss any such situation with you at any time.

  • What happens if a claim is filed against me?
We will review the claim to confirm that coverage is in order and then assign one of our experienced claims consultants to meet with you as soon as possible to discuss not only the facts of the case, but also what you should expect as the case proceeds. We will also retain an attorney who is an expert in defending medical liability cases to represent you. As the case moves forward, we will retain medical and other forensic experts to review the matter and provide us with their opinions as to the merits of the claim and, if appropriate, to testify on your behalf, both in pretrial proceedings and at trial. We will also provide you with assistance in preparing for your own appearance at deposition and trial. Finally, our claims consultant will continue to confer with you and the other members of the defense team throughout the life of the case to ensure that any concerns you may have are promptly addressed.

  • How do you select legal counsel to represent policyholders?
The attorneys we retain to defend our insureds are all recognized experts in handling medical liability cases. We understand, however, that determining which of them is the best choice to defend a given case is not a “one size fits all” proposition. We therefore work to match the lawyer’s particular strengths and capabilities to the needs of the individual case in an effort to maximize the likelihood of a satisfactory resolution of the matter.
