About Risk Management

Princeton’s strength is demonstrated by our patient safety data-driven approach to meeting your risk management needs and our commitment to partnership, not only with our policyholders, but also with premier organizations and leaders in patient safety and risk management. Your success is our success. That’s why the members of our Healthcare Risk Services Department don’t just work for you, they partner with you in reducing your liability.

The Healthcare Risk Services Department offers a wide range of resources designed to educate and support policyholders in our Professional Liability, General Liability and Property lines of coverage through various methods:

  • Physician Specialty Reports  Log In or Register
These reports, available for a number of our physician specialties, represent the most common allegations, diagnoses and contributing factors that lead to adverse patient outcomes and subsequent litigation. Having the longest track record of all insurers in New Jersey has yielded the most plentiful source of information and data – our own claims files. Our risk data warehouse capabilities allow us to provide policyholders with richly coded claims information to assist in understanding better the risk management, patient safety and system breakdowns that contributed to these claims, along with comparative benchmarking.
  • Toolkits  Log In or Register
Available exclusively for Princeton policyholders, The Physician Office Practice Toolkit and Dental Office Practice Toolkit were created to assist policyholders with their risk management needs. Within the toolkits are risk management guidelines, reproducible forms, and a self-assessment questionnaire.  Also available are self-adhesive patient telephone call record pads, which may be requested through our Healthcare Risk Services Department (800-334-0588) or by submitting your request online.
  • On-site office visits and assessments
Our consultants are available to perform office practice assessments to assist your risk management efforts and can even come to your practice to review policies and procedures or to conduct customized educational sessions and workshops. Learn more about our staff. Learn more about educational opportunities.
  • Risk Resource Line
Have a risk management-related question? Call our toll-free Risk Resource Line at 1-866-Rx-4RISK (866-794-7475).  Whether your question is as simple as how long you should retain medical records or as complex as handling a non-compliant patient, our experienced consultants are on-hand to assist you. Read answers (anonymous of course) to some of the questions we receive through our Risk Resource Line on our risk management site, Risk Review.
  • Educational Opportunities
CME/CDE educational opportunities are available through courses offered by several of our risk consultants, who have been certified by the Institute for Healthcare Communication, on the critical subject of communication. Currently, courses are available for Clinician/Patient Communication, Communication of Unanticipated Outcomes and Strangers in Crisis (geared for short-term relationship encounters, such as that of Emergency Department physicians and hospitalists). Individual coaching on these same topics is readily available, as well, through our Risk Resource Line. Workshops on various office practice topics are periodically offered for physicians and office practice staff, and facility risk managers may participate in educational roundtables focusing on relevant topics of interest. Webinars offering CME credit are also available.
  • Links to Important Patient Safety Information
Our healthcare risk services team continually monitors and sorts through industry trends and best practices to bring you the most helpful tips and newsworthy articles available.
  • Electronic Medical Records Guide  Log In or Register
The Princeton Insurance Electronic Medical Records Patient Safety & Risk Management Guide was created to provide information concerning the proper use of electronic medical records to improve the quality and safety of patient care while decreasing potential liability risk.
  • Data-Driven Services for Insured Hospitals and Healthcare Facilities
Our growing risk data capture and warehouse capabilities and our partnership with Risk Management Foundation Strategies of the Harvard Medical Institutions allow us to provide insured acute care facilities with coded claims information to assist in a better understanding of the risk management, patient safety and system breakdowns that contributed to their claims. Insured facilities also see how they compare against other facilities, when adjusted for various utilization/volume factors.
  • Additional Services for Insured Hospitals
Hospital policyholders are provided with an assigned professional liability and general liability risk consultant.  Professional liability consultants provide advice on an array of topics, as well as guidance on risk management/patient safety program development. General liability consultants perform annual facility-wide surveys, which focus on physical plant, safety and security, biomedical, emergency preparedness, life safety, hazardous materials and utility management risk exposures. In addition, subscriptions are provided to ECRI Institute’s Healthcare Risk Control System, allowing on-line access to a comprehensive set of risk management tools, documents, newsletters, policies, procedures, risk analyses, checklists, and e-mailed risk alerts. With more than 300 staff members dedicated to detailed research, current event scanning and notifications, ECRI is a value-added benefit for our facilities that further augments our efforts to promote patient safety.
  • Fee-For-Service Products
For non-insured institutions, and on a fee-for-service basis, Princeton, through its wholly owned subsidiary Princeton Risk Protection, Inc. can perform risk management program review and evaluation services. General liability consultants can perform in-depth clinical/biomedical engineering management and general liability surveys for acute care facilities. For rehabilitation facilities, we also provide independent, third-party CARF reviews for facilities seeking accreditation/reaccreditation.
