On Thursday, September 8, registered nurses, physicians, and other practitioners and staff from various healthcare settings gathered at the NJ Hospital Association Conference & Event Center despite flooded roadways throughout the state to learn about safe injection practices at a conference hosted by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services (NJDHSS) in collaboration with Health Research & Educational Trust of New Jersey.

A panel of experts was on-hand to discuss the widespread issue of infections being passed through injections due to lapses in basic infection control practices by healthcare professionals. Among the presenters were Dr. Barbara Montana, medical director from NJDHSS; Evelyn McKnight, patient advocate and president of HONOReform Foundation; Phyllis DeCola, Princeton Insurance healthcare risk services manager and Deputy Attorney General Siobhan Krier from the New Jersey Department of Law & Public Safety.

The conference, titled “Keep the Infection out of the Injection,” centered on the NJDHSS’ campaign “One Needle, One Syringe, Only One Time,” which includes information, FAQs, training resources, posters for patient rooms and a public service announcement (it can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3_6-0h1nfo or accessed through www.nj.gov/health and http://www.oneandonlycampaign.org/).

A second, abbreviated conference co-sponsored by the Cape May County Board of Health took place on Wednesday, September 14 in Somers Point at the Greate Bay Country Club.

We will be happy to help you facilitate an onsite program; please give us a call at 1-866-Rx-4RISK, or you may call the NJDHSS directly at 1-609-826-5964.  Also, remember to check our Risk Management page for injection safety links as well as news and updates about upcoming continuing education opportunities.

Princeton Insurance Recognized by American Heart Association
New Jersey’s leading medical malpractice insurance provider named 2011 “Start! Fit-Friendly Company”

Princeton Insurance has been named a 2011 Start! Fit-Friendly Company by the American Heart Association in recognition of the company’s efforts to promote a culture of good health and worksite wellness.  An on-site fitness center, walking club, wellness-focused lunchtime seminars and FitBucks rewards program are just a few of the reasons Princeton Insurance qualified for this important achievement.

The American Heart Association notes that American adults spend most of their waking hours at work and many are in sedentary office environments. Therefore, they encourage employers to provide opportunities for their employees to lead more active lifestyles, thereby increasing productivity, reducing absenteeism, lowering turnover, decreasing healthcare costs and encouraging employees to live longer, stronger, healthier lives.

The organization has deemed Princeton successful at reaching these objectives through numerous initiatives that have been implemented in recent years.

Aside from the fitness center and FitBucks reward program, Princeton Insurance has offered employees various exercise classes during lunch hours and after hours, the opportunity to join the healthy weight group in their regular meetings to monitor weight loss and maintenance, a weekly walking club, the services of a part-time personal trainer, pamphlets, emails, an outdoor basketball hoop and more.

Nutrition is also a determining factor when being considered for a Start! Fit-Friendly award, and Princeton met the criteria due to the cafeteria’s offerings of “heart-healthy” options including salad bar, fresh vegetables and fruits, bottled water, fruit juices and milk.

Hogya said she is humbled by the invitation to join the board but also eager to begin working with the society on its educational efforts.

“I am honored to be a part of this prestigious organization and have always admired the work they do in promoting education within this important industry,” said Hogya, who began her insurance career in 1979 and has been with Princeton Insurance for 23 years. “I am particularly enthusiastic about their plans to encourage young people to consider the many insurance-related career paths available to them.”

President of the society David Arnold said that it’s not only the impact Hogya has made both at Princeton Insurance and within the industry, but also the commitment Princeton Insurance has demonstrated to the healthcare community that made Hogya an ideal candidate.

“Princeton Insurance brings a strong business and relationship presence in the central New Jersey insurance market as well as a dominant position in the important healthcare sector,” said Arnold. “Lois has been an influential leader at Princeton Insurance and has great ideas for how the Insurance Society of Philadelphia can partner with Princeton Insurance and their clients and staff.”

Princeton Insurance President and CEO Charlie Lefevre said the passion and values Hogya brings to her position at Princeton Insurance align perfectly with the society’s mission.

“We’re very proud to see Lois elected to the board.  It’s an especially good fit, given her considerable experience coupled with a strong commitment to education and lifelong learning.”

Hogya’s first experience as a board member will come on June 18th at the society’s next board meeting.
